Instructions for the Drone Pod System

Drone Pod is a drone accessory that allows you to transport cargo with your drone.  The system is designed to function on the upper part of the drone fuselage allowing for free function of the underbody sensor system or camera unit.  Drone Pod is designed to strap securely to the body of your drone in as close to the center of the drone as possible.  

NotePay close attention that the underbody straps do not obstruct the vision of underbody drone sensors.

Note:  Drone Pod could obstruct GPS signals to your drone since it sits on the upper fuselage.  Our tests have shown that an unloaded Drone Pod does NOT interfere with GPS signals.  Tests with Paper, Lead Weights, Liquid (Water), and Rock also showed no interference in ground or flight GPS operation.  All required GPS parameters were acquired for normal flight in all test cases.

Specifications

Max payload depends on the lift capability of your drone.  We have tested Drone Pod on a DJI Mavic and a DJI Phantom.  Each were able to easily lift 1/2  pound of payload and had take off issues with 1 pound of payload.  In both cases we were able to get the drone up to take off velocity by forcing the max prop speed on take off.  Once the payload gets into the air, the onboard sensors do a good job of leveling the drone to the payload.  We also found that the DJI Mavic compensates for the excess windage created by the Drone Pod and will maintain flight well using this compensation.  

No modifications to the normal drone settings were made to the test drones.

Setup

Drone Pod comes pre-assembled for a mono body drone.  If you are using an X body drone, you must add the provided additional Flight Strap and buckle to the system.

Instructions for using Drone Pod

  • Installing Drone Pod on a mono body Drone (ex. DJI Mavic).
    • Place the Drone Pod system on top of the drone, in as close to the center of the drone as possible.
    • Wrap the forward flight strap around the main body of the drone and run it up through the end of the flight strap.  
      • Tension the strap as tightly as possible until it clicks into place.
    • Run the excess end of the Flight Strap through the opposite side of the buckle and trim or tuck behind the Flight Strap.
    • Repeat the same procedure for the aft flight strap.
    • Inspect the underbody of the drone.  Insure the Flight Straps are not obstructing any underbody sensors.  Adjust the Flight Straps to avoid the sensors while maintaining a tight tension on the Flight Straps.
  • Installing Drone Pod on an X body Drone (ex. DJI Phantom).
    • Add the extra Flight Strap extensions to the ends of the installed Flight Straps using the included extra buckles.
    • Insert the buckles in the hole at the end of the Flight Straps with the ridges up.  Secure the buckles by screwing the Buckle Nut on behind the Flight Strap hole.
    • Place the Drone Pod system on top of the drone, in as close to the center of the drone as possible.
    • Wrap the forward flight strap around the main body of the drone (not the struts to avoid interference with the props) and run it up through the end of the flight strap.  
    • Tension the strap as tightly as possible until it clicks into place.
    • Run the excess end of the Flight Strap through the opposite side of the buckle and trim or tuck behind the Flight Strap.
    • Repeat the same procedure for the aft flight strap.
    • Inspect the underbody of the drone.  Insure the Flight Straps are not obstructing any underbody sensors.  Adjust the Flight Straps to avoid the sensors while maintaining a tight tension on the Flight Straps.
